Angela Annesley
Based in West Cornwall, Angela specialises in handprinted woodcuts and original paintings. Her work brings the wild side of Cornwall to life with windswept trees, animals roaming in their natural habitats and traces of the more elemental sides of life and landscape of the peninsula. Woodcuts
Angela uses Japanese woodcarving chisels in her work, utilising ply, natural wood and hardboard. She works freely, without the constraints of traditional woodcut technique. A sparse sketch begins each piece, with detail added according to mood and time. Each woodcut edition is printed on a handmade press in the Ravenstongue Studio, and signed and numbered. Some prints are also available on textiles, including cushions.
Paintings
These paintings are mixed-media, using gesso and charcoal alongside acrylic or oil paint. Like the woodcuts they start with a rough sketch and gain their character through the repeated application of layers of colour, combined with gesso and charcoal. The result is a colourful and multifaceted response to sky, land, sea and town that represents a printmaker's vision of the painted world.
Ravenstongue Press Books
Collaboration provides an alternative way of looking at Angela's prints. Angela's illustrated story books featuring prints and accompanying stories/poetic prose, published by Ravenstongue Press, include Sennen Cove, St Ives, Whispering Wood, Moonlight over Cornwall, and others, some in collaboration with other artists and writers in Cornwall.
Illustration
Angela is also a book illustrator. She has worked with Penguin Vintage, The History Press and local writing groups in Cornwall to produce a distinctive series of cover illustrations. She has also designed Tshirts for eco surf brand Finisterre, produced illustrations for the award-winning short film Backwoods and backdrops for dance/circus company MakeShift.
